HEAT 2012 TRYOUTS ARE SET

The 2012 Carolina Heat tryout date has been set.  The tryouts will be held on Saturday March 3rd at 1 pm at Jackson Middle School.  The Heat are looking to rebound from a disappointing 2011 season and get back to the winning that is the signature of the organization.  Coach Malachi King looks forward to the new season and the fresh start.  When asked about the 2012 season, Coach King smiles, knowing that with hard work and commitment, the 2012 Heat will surprise quite a few in the CCFL.

There are several key building blocks that the Heat are excited to build upon for 2012.  Quarterback Nick Mixon is a bright spot for the offense that had only 4 veteran starters in 2011.  Sean Johnson and Correy McManus are also looking to have breakout years in their sophomore campaign.  Coach King is quick to point out though that no one has a guaranteed roster spot.  "Every year, each player has to earn a position on the team.  Not one player can come to camp in 2012 and expect to make the roster based on past performance.  If you are not hungry and earn a spot, you may find yourself on the outside looking in."  The Heat believe that this competition drives performance and makes the entire team better.

2012 has a lot of promise, but there is a lot of work to be done before kickoff in July.  Stay tuned to www.heatfootball.com as the building blocks are put in place for the best brand of semi-pro football in North Carolina...THE CAROLINA HEAT.

HEAT BOUNCE BACK WITH CONSECUTIVE WINS AFTER O-3 START

If the Carolina Heat are nothing else, they are resilient.  After the very young and inexperienced HEAT started 2011 with three losses, they have bounced back to even the record at 3-3.  The turn around has not come without some difficult changes and some welcomed additions to the team.  The most successful addition is quarterback Nick Mixon who has led the team to 2 victories as a starter.

Nick is a former player at local Asheboro High School and has spearheaded the winning changes for the program.  It started with a thrilling 20-7 victory in the hostile confines of long time rival Virginia Storm.   The HEAT followed up that performance with an edge of your seat thriller over newcomer Stanly Co Panthers 28-27.  Mixon allows former quarterback Robert Barham to move to his natural position of wide receiver where he has produced several spectacular catches including (2) 30+ yd TD receptions in the 1st half over the Panthers. With Barham, 2nd year stand out Cortney Simmons and veteran playmaker Sammy Henderson, the HEAT have a multitude of targets for Mixon to throw to.

The HEAT defense did a good job of corralling the multi-talented former ACC star T.A. McLendon in route to the victory over the Panthers and continue their strong play on the shoulders of standout veteran Curt Marshall.  It was Marshall's "pick-6" against the Storm that sealed the first victory of the season. Veterans Mike Daye and Scottie Goldston have had a huge impact on a defense that showcases 8 new starters at any given time.

With this weekends forfeit victory over the Raleigh Chargers, the HEAT find themselves 3-3 with 5 games to go.  The HEAT hope to make a push over the next month to position themselves for a home playoff game in the post season. The next home game is Saturday September 17th as the HEAT host the Thomasville Titans.  Kickoff is 6 pm and tickets are $6

HEAT SUFFER 1ST LOSS OF SEASON AT HOME IN OVERTIME

The Carolina Heat's first home game of 2011 came up just short in overtime.  The HEAT have a bye week and then look to rebound on the road to the Carolina Renegades on Saturday July 30.

The HEAT started the game with a terrific drive capped by a 4 yd run by Bradley Haynes who registered the first touchdown of 2011.  The Catawba Co Hornets were up to the task and answered right back as the game was tied 6-6 for most of the first half.  The Hornets broke the tie on a controversial score, one in which the officials called a penalty that would have negated the score right before halftime, then after some discussion and an overrule by the head official, waved off the flag and allowed the score to stand.  The HEAT took a halftime deficit (12-6) and turned it into a 15-12 lead after a field goal by kicker Hector Ortiz and a touchdown pass from quarterback Robert "2Tall" Barham to WR Cortney Simmons.

After a go ahead score by the Hornets, the HEAT and Ortiz tied the game with under a minute to go in the 4th qarter with a field goal.  As the teams battled back and forth in the overtime period, the Hornets finally broke the tie and won the game with just under 30 seconds to go in the 15 minute bonus period.

Defensive Standouts include John Connally, Jaz Totten, Woodrow Scriven and Josh Broadway...all of whom made big plays and kept the Hornets quarterback on the run for most of the night.

Be sure to come out to the next home game as the HEAT host the Iredell Warriors on Saturday August 6th.  Tickets are $6 and kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm at Eastern Randolph High School.  Come witness the best brand of semi-pro football in North Carolina...the CAROLINA HEAT.

PRACTICE CONTINUES AS THE HEAT SCULPTS ITS 2011 ROSTER

The Carolina Heat are charging forward in preparation for the 2011 season.  This year there are more than 40 new faces vying to become a part of the best brand of semi-pro football in North Carolina.  The Heat have been practicing since early March to put together this year's roster and have plenty of talent to choose from.  The coaching staff has been busy evaluating players and making cuts to get to the desired number of players in each position.  Head coach Malachi King reports that the Heat has again been fortunate to add such promising talent to a solid core of veteran players.  Coach King expects a continuation of the history of success that the Heat has earned in years past.  Many leaders from the 2010 season are determined to set the tone early for this season.  Key veteran offensive players such as Dreyan Willis, Naquan Arthur, Kwame Robinson and Aaron Evans are focused on making the 2011 Heat the best TEAM in the league.  With the return of long time veterans like Michael Daye and Scotty Goldston, the defensive team has elevated expectations and plan on more than a few dominating performances.

The Heat feel that they have "addition by subtraction" in the departure of a few older players and welcome the tenacity and eagerness of the rookie crop.  Early standouts include Correy McManus, Aaron Mallet, Joshua Edwards, Sean Johnson and Jahreal Cromartie just to name a few.  While they have impressed the coaches, the next phase in making the team is right around the corner as the Heat practice in pads for the first time in 2011.  Keep tabs on the Heat right here on the NEWS page of this website, but you can also follow us on twitter:  www.twitter.com/heatfootball

TIS THE SEASON FOR GIVING

The Carolina Heat have a long standing tradition of helping those less fortunate in the Piedmont Triad community. Each holiday season, the Carolina Heat donates toys to the 102 Jamz "Stuff the Bus" campaign. "Stuff the Bus" is an affiliate of the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots where toys are given to less fortunate children in the Triad.

The Bus parks at local Walmart stores in a different city each night from Wednesday to Saturday and asks those in the community to help bring Christmas to needy children.

Wednesday night, the bus was in Burlington NC where the campaign begins. The HEAT met at the bus at 7 pm as we will do on Thursday & Friday evenings (Saturday we will meet at 11 am). The goal of the CAROLINA HEAT is to give toys on each of the 4 days with the players on the HEAT from the 4 cities.

We ask everyone reading this post to look inside yourselves and acknowledge your blessings over the past year. We ask that you pay it forward and give toys to needy children for Christmas. HELP US STUFF THE BUS!
